I was at an Indian-American event about two years ago, when they called everyone to their feet before the show. They started playing the national anthem—Indian—and unexpectedly, I felt tears welling in my eyes. Everyone in the auditorium sang Jana Gana Mana proudly, and in the same breath sang the Star Spangled Banner next. I felt a sudden rush of affection for everyone in that room and their love for two countries. I felt a patriotism and kinship with both countries.
Even though I love both countries, I certainly know a lot more about one. My entire education has taught me about America—it’s founding, it’s government, it’s politics. In fact my interest in this country eventually lead me to becoming a political science minor in college. I’ve visited Washington D.C., been to all the monuments and museums. I’ve seen countless documentaries on the Founding Fathers and formative Presidents.
Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about India. While I’m not woefully ignorant, I can hold an intelligent conversation about American government but only know the basics of Indian government. I came name key influencers of American politics, but don’t know much about Indian elections. Of course, some of this is to be expected since I grew up in America.
In America, from a young age kids are encouraged to be politically active. We are taught that our voice matters, that it was our duty as citizens to be informed and the instrument of change.
When my family and I were preparing to become American citizens, we were given a booklet full of 100 questions that every citizen should know the answer to. The topics ranged from the founding of America, to current day politicians. It was an interesting reversal of roles when my brother and I were quizzing my parents on information we had learned in elementary school. We teased my mother relentlessly because it took her nearly ten tries to memorize the Pledge of Allegiance.
I look forward now, as an adult, to learning more about India. It has a fascinating history, one that stretches far more back than our younger adopted country. Although I will probably spend most of my life here, in my own miniscule way influencing its path, there is something to be said for homeland.
When my great grandmother passed away a few years ago, I felt immediate regret at not having spent more time with her. I regretted all the stories I never heard, the questions I never asked her, and the perspective that she had that is now lost to me. Knowing history is important, and you have to seize the present before it slips away. I want to know my two countries fully.
