Google creates 'artificial brain'

June 27, 2012: Google has created an 'artificial brain' using 16,000 computer processors, with upwards of a billion connections.

The team led by Google's Jeff Dean then gave random images gathered from ten million videos from YouTube as input and allowed the machine to learn on its own.

Astonishingly, the ‘brain’ was able to focus in on cats. Dean said, "We never told it during the training 'this is a cat' …It basically invented the concept of a cat."

According to the team, their experimental results show that it is possible to train a face detector without having to label images as containing a face or not, in contrast to what looks like a common perception.

"We also find that the same network is sensitive to other high-level concepts such as cat faces and human bodies," Google's team said.

"Starting with these learned features, we trained our network to obtain 15.8 % accuracy in recognizing twenty thousand object categories from ImageNet, a leap of 70 %  relative improvement over the previous state of the art," it said, according to a Daily Mail report.

The system was created in Google's 'blue sky ideas' lab, Google X, in Google's Mountain View, CA, headquarters.
