First-time Daddy

There is nothing to push away those fears of being daddy. Nothing!! No booklet or guidance, however much you wished, with your child’s name on it.

You are left clueless, and you have to start doing what humans are very good at – Adapting.

The first few days are rushing - with waves of euphoria, adrenaline, caffeine… But there is going to be sooo much to fight with - Forms, hospital processes, bombardment of contradictory information, the endless tests, vaccinations that are going to make your cutie yelp… and YOU.. Have to keep track of everything, because, fascinating though, the hospital faculty - they are still human themselves.

Advises that are often unhelpful, visitors, uncertainty, vulnerability and tiredness!! They are going to knock your front door all together. Even if you may be a person who has dealt with a lot of ambiguity and crisis, you feel like in the middle of war now.

You read everything possible that relate to you and your baby, listen to the opinions, choose one of them when it makes sense, shoo away those that don’t, learn to live on little sleep, wish visitors on their way, thank family for support, close doors, draw curtains, take phones off their hooks! Uuff!

You have not slept for weeks, holding the thermometer, reading a high fever, holding a whining baby… Not any whining baby - Yours! A long time for dawn, you can’t think properly, you are shattered - seeing your cuddly crying, the hospital nowhere near, and you don’t know what has hurt her.

That’s when you know you have to be responsible, and THIS is your crisis.

But, alas, you spend weeks lost in your baby – holding her all the while, breathing her sweetness, and lousing hours into her beautiful eyes, understanding her patterns and rhythms, singing to calm her, rocking her to sleep, while obsessing over her little fingers.

You become the expert for your daughter. It does not matter how many children you have. The willingness to be a good parent - that does.

The chaotic, crazy days, the instinct to know what is the best for your daughter, to have butterflies… It all flies away. What remains is the hopeless love with the perfection, which you have created.
