The City of Philadelphia has created an all new Soccer tournament exclusively for the Immigrants in the country! Over 800 immigrant players who are from around the world and settled in the US will battle it out on the field for the title.
India, Mexico, Ireland, Vietnam are some of the favorites in this tournament that has 32 teams in total. The event is unofficially termed to be the World Cup for US Immigrants but is actually called the Unity Cup. The teams and players have been practicing hard to perform at their very best. People have shown a lot of interest in this tournament and all team slots were booked in just 5 days of announcing the tournament!
The organizer of Unity Cup and Philadelphia’s representative for Parks and Recreation, Bill Salvatore said in a statement that interested people had lined up as early as 8AM outside their office to enquire and register! The city has over 200,000 immigrants which are double of what was there in the 1990 census. This accounts for over 13% of the city’s population and a tournament like this will only strengthen ties between various ethnic groups.
Unity Cup Championship commences on the 5th of November. The home ground of the city’s Major League Baseball team, the ‘Philadelphia Phillies’ will host the matches. This ground, the Citizens Bank Park is expected to lure in as much as 5000 spectators for the event. As it is the custom, the stadium parking lot will be packed with food stalls and people will be on the Bbq grill.
The Indian Soccer Team at the Unity Cup Tournament has players from other countries like Bangladesh, Egypt, Morocco and even Uzbekistan. Clearly, the teams are not restricted by nationality and this will help communities mingle and get along together better. The organizers plan to make this an annual event after the encouraging initial enthusiasm.
If you are in the city, head over to the Citizens Bank Park on the November 5th for the first match between Vietnam and Mexico. Follow Local Pulse for more updates on the Unity Cup.
