Richard Gere and Vijay with their ladies
October 19, 2012: While almost all of the attention from Tamil movie buffs is being directed towards Vijay's 'Thuppaki', which is said to be the biggest release in Kollywood this Diwali, the film has also attracted some attention for all the wrong reasons.
Some have been talking about similarities between a 'Thuppaki' poster where Vijay carries Kajal Agarwal and the poster of the Richard Gere-starrer, An Officer and a Gentlemen.
People have even gone to the extent of assuming that 'Thuppaki' has been inspired by that Hollywood film.
However, director AR Murugadoss has reportedly made a timely clarification that 'Thuppaki' is totally original.
During a recent interview, the director of Ghajini fame made it clear that 'Thuppaki' doesn't have an army setting like Gere's movie, as it is actually set in Mumbai. He has confirmed that everything about 'Thuppaki' is original, besides the scene that appears similar to the Richard Gere movie.
AR Murugadoss has also spoken a few words about Vijay and his role in the movie. He has revealed that Vijay plays a lovable and proactive character, adding that it has been quite a long time since he saw a Tamil movie hero as handsome and energetic as Vijay.
He also mentioned that the hero’s current role in 'Thuppaki' is not like the usual ones seen in Tamil movies, saying that Vijay’s role will be the bubby and energetic type – the kind usually played by female leads. The director also remarked that he feels this will be the best role played by Vijay so far in Tamil movies.
Apart from Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead roles, the upcoming Tamil action thriller will also star Vidyut Jamwal, Jayaram, Gautham Kurup, Akshara Gowda and Sathyan in supporting roles.
The film, made with a budget of almost Rs 70 crore, is slated for a Diwali 2012 release, on Nov 9th.
