Sigma: Vijay’s Son Steps Behind the Camera
Being a first-time director is difficult enough.
Being a first-time director when your father is Vijay means practically every frame will be examined through a magnifying glass.
That is the situation Jason Sanjay walked into with Sigma, his feature directorial debut, released on October 2, 2026.
The Tamil action-crime film stars Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah and has attracted attention partly because of Jason's family background and partly because audiences wanted to see whether he would establish an identity separate from his famous father.
Early reactions have been mixed.
Indian Express gave the film 1.5/5, arguing that Jason shows visual ambition but that the screenplay struggles to make full use of its ideas. The review highlighted Sundeep Kishan's energy while questioning whether the film's heist elements come together convincingly.
Audience reactions have been somewhat more varied. Social-media responses cited by Times of India praised portions of Sundeep Kishan's comedy and action work, as well as the interval, while opinions on the overall film and Jason's direction were divided.
The box office has also started modestly. By its third day, reports placed the India net total at approximately ₹5.35 crore.
Why diaspora audiences may still be curious
For Tamil families abroad, Jason Sanjay's debut has an interesting generational quality.
Many Tamil NRIs have watched Vijay's career across decades — from romantic films to the enormous star-driven productions that later defined him. Now his son is entering cinema from the other side of the camera.
That makes Sigma interesting even when the reviews aren't glowing.
There is also something refreshingly different about Jason choosing directing rather than immediately positioning himself as the next actor in a film family.
For younger Indian Americans considering careers in creative fields, that distinction may resonate. Famous surname aside, filmmaking still requires building a voice, managing actors, understanding rhythm and surviving very public criticism.
A debut does not have to be perfect to tell us something about the filmmaker who made it.
Sigma appears to be exactly that sort of debut: ambitious, uneven and closely watched.
The question now isn't whether Jason Sanjay has delivered an instant classic. Reviews suggest he hasn't.
The more interesting question is what he learns before film number two.
