The standard of Tamil cinema has increased over the period of time where films are receiving top recognitions from the International film festivals. In fact, there are films that are sent to the world premiere before releasing in the local town. Glancing through the history of Tamil cinema, the films that were sent to Oscar nominations comprise of big star cast with the work of technically well versed artists. Kamal Hassan’s Aalavandhan (2001) can be reminded in that case.
Without much expectation of the mainstream audience in Kollywood, the film Kakka Muttai (Crow’s egg) directed by the debutant M.Manikandan produced by actor Dhanush in combination with the ace director Vetrimaran bagged two national awards in the 62nd National Film Awards of India.
The film got the recognition under the categories of Best children’s film and Best Child artists. Nevertheless the film was screened at the 39th Toronto International Film Festival before the actual release in the town, the film received unanimous support from the audience and was also declared as a box office hit.
Before Kakamuttai, the films that are particularly aimed at award ceremonies had never attained commercial success in Kollywood. Breaking through the streak, Kakamuttai gained all the appreciations from the people.
Taking the pride of Tamil cinema to a stupendous level, Kakka Muttai has been selected on behalf of Indian Cinema to represent Oscars 2016 under the best foreign film category.
Along with Kaka Muttai, the bilingual (Telugu-Tamil) film Bahubali directed by S.S.Rajamouli is also about to represent India under the same category.
While Kaka Muttai is a small budget comedy-drama film with the plot that describes the longing of two young brothers in a Chennai slum to get their first taste of a pizza, the historical based and technically high budgeted film Bahubali is the beginning of the two series revenge story.
Both of the films are totally contrast to each other in terms of genre, star cast, technical work and budget wise. However, it is now evident that creativity will be recognized in all the possible ways, though it is India’s biggest film (Bahubali) or a film about just 350 bucks Pizza, until there is a Soul in it.
