It is hard to believe that a charismatic and dynamic character like Hema Malini actually turns 66 today! Her illustrious career needs no introduction but we felt the need to recollect the path from a humble South Indian family to being the darling of the box office.
Hema Malini was born in a Tamil speaking Iyengar family on this day back in 1948. Her journey to stardom was greatly helped by the fact that her mother was a film producer. Her interest in movies made her quit school and get into the industry full time!
Though her debut was in a few low budget films down south, she came into the limelight with her Bollywood debut up against Raj Kapoor in Sapno Ka Saudagar in 1970.
She stole the spotlight with her bold decision to take up movies which other actresses of the era where known to reject. Johnny Mera Nam in ‘72 was a classic example. It was not long before the gamble paid off and she won the Filmfare award for the Best Actress for Seetha Aur Geetha.
The major milestone however, both for her career and Indian cinema was ‘Sholay’ in ‘80. This also established Hema Malini as the leading actress of Bollywood! She also fell in love with Dharmendra on the sets of the movie and within the next 5 years, the couple converts to Islam and get married. They have two daughters.
Hema made a grand comeback in Bollywood in Baghban starring Amitabh Bachchan. She entered politics in the recent General Elections and won in the Mathura district with an impressive margin of votes.
