Fascinating Fa(mily)tasy Entertainer- Puli

Have you heard about popular Australian’s sledging in ashes cricket series? Yeah, obviously you would be familiar about it, if you are an updated cricket viewer. Well, one of the most celebrated Superstars in Kollywood, who is fondly called as ‘Illayathalapathy’ Vijay, is accustomed to similar scenarios in the recent times whenever his films were about to release. Following Thalaivaa and Kaththi, Puli also got into last minute trouble for its release. The IT raid that happened one day before the release of the film triggered some issues and until 9 am today, the film’s release was tentative and special shows were cancelled in all the theatres.

Therefore, after lots of efforts by actor Vijay and co, the film’s release was confirmed and Of course, the celebration started. His ardent fans were thronging into the cinema halls to catch the first premiere for the audience.

Visual wonder in front of the dark atmosphere

The 70mm screen (one such kind) was set. Projector turned on with the Dolby atmos sound systems. The thundering crowd has gone frenzy when the text ‘Illayathalapathy Vijay’ appeared on the silver screen.

The film opens up with the introduction of a group of people who live under the slavery rule of the Queen (Played by Sridevi) and head of armed forces (Played by Kicha Sudeepa). They are called as Vedhalam- The mankind who torture and sully people for their slavery rule. Vijay enters into the picture when a group of Vedhalams are making atrocities in order to collect taxes from their slaves. Actor Prabhu plays the role of step father for Marudheeran (Vijay), Shruthi Hassan plays the love interest of Vijay. Along with them National Award winner Thambi Ramaiyaah, Sathyan and huge numbers of people live under the rule of Queen (Sridevi).

The first half of the movie goes with beautiful love sequences between Vijay and Shruthi Hassan combined with peppy dance numbers and stomach bursting humor. A situation at the end of the first half demands Marudheeran (Vijay) to head to the town of Vedhalams to rescue his wedded love interest Shruthi Hassan.

The journey begins here. Marudheeran accompanies Thambi Ramaaiyah and Sathyan with him. They pretend to be like Vedhalams lest to shadow their original identity and to enter into the place of Vedhalams. On their way, they meet a group of people who are called as Kullargal (Palm size people - Lilliput) who help them to find their way to the land of Vedhalams. Hansika, who plays the role of Princess (Sridevi’s daughter) makes her presence in this part followed by an intimidating entry of antagonist kicha Sudeepa.

Filled with frequent chuckles and delightful visuals, the second half goes as racy as the first half. Director Chimbu Deven proves his exquisite talent with peculiar and fantasy characters including a Bird, mighty tortoise and a mammoth semi-human being. Vijay scores more than expected with his brand new avatar Pulivendhan. While fast-paced screenplay, palatable storytelling, outstanding action sequences, realistic CG work and spellbinded VFX, sensational BGM by DSP and fantabulous cinematography by Natraj aka Nutty are the big positives of the film, unwanted song in the second half of the film and slight exaggeration in dialogues at few places can be stated as negatives.
