When it comes to being a visionary and thinking out of the box, nobody in Indian politics can beat Narendra Modi. The news is that Mr. Modi wants to mark the 10th year of his Gujarat government by unveiling a grand plan to build the world’s tallest statue - the ‘Statue of Unity’. At 182-metre height, this statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel – the Iron Man of India, will be double the height of NYC’s ‘Statue of Liberty’ and four times that of Rio’s ‘Christ, the Redeemer’.
It will be built on the Sadhu Bet riverbed of the Narmada, about 3-km from the Sardar Sarovar dam, to be reached in boats. It will have a high-tech museum, chronicling 90 years history of India’s freedom fighters (1857-1947). Going much beyond a structure- it will be developed as a research and academic centre for preserving the unity and integrity of India, its rich culture and heritage, for research on agriculture which was dear to Sardar, for research on tribal life and so on. Thus, it would be standing high not just in meters and feet but much more in terms of academic, historical, national and spiritual values.

The best part of this whole idea is the way Indian farmers are going to contribute – by giving away their farming tools made of iron. On the day of Sardar Patel's birth anniversary on October 31, 2013, a nationwide campaign will be launched covering more than five lakh villages throughout the country to collect small pieces of iron of any tool used by farmers from each village, that will be used in the building the statue. Just imagine the pride a poor farmer will feel on seeing this statue.
Now comes the sad part. The project celebrates the Indian freedom struggle, culture and the toil of Indian farmers, but unfortunately it exposes the deplorable state of our technical know-how and engineering standards back home. The statue which will eventually become a national pride is going to be built by Turner Construction of the US, reputed for building many famous and giant structures such as Burj Dubai and the Yankee Stadium of New York.
“I would love to have your suggestions for this historic memorial”, says Mr. Modi on the official website. I have a suggestion – get some iron from the NRIs as well.
