Which one would you vote for?

Recently I came across two different pieces of kindness and was a little confused as which one is better over the other. First I will go through both of them and then discuss my confusion.First I was sitting in a coffee shop where I saw a gentleman who walked in and ordered 3 coffees and said one for me and 2 suspended. The man took one coffee and paid for three and walked away.  I was sitting with my friend and wondered what it meant by suspended and asked my friend if he knew it, he asked me to wait and watch building my suspense.

We sat there for a while chatting about our old college days and then suddenly an old woman walked in with torn clothes and went up to the counter and asked if there was a suspended coffee. I was very happy to see that this was a great concept to help people and this could help so many homeless people every day who cannot afford even a coffee.

The second one is something I read about on the internet very recently about a homeless man who was approached by a man who offered him two options, one was to get 100 dollars (the easier option) and the other was to commit that he would spend 1 hour every day with the man to learn programming for 8 weeks. The homeless man chose the latter option and everyday learnt programming in JavaScript and at the end of 8 weeks was able to build an application based on what he had learnt.

Both of the above are acts of kindness which should be appreciated but when I think more about it somehow I feel the latter is much better act of kindness because in the former case although you are helping someone by providing a coffee but that is a very short term help as you could do it for a day, week or a month but you will not be able to do if for lifetime of the person. However if you look at the second case the person helped the homeless to learn programming using which he could write his own applications and sell them or get a job at some company or even do freelancing. This helps the homeless person to be self-sufficient. However this is my opinion and I could be wrong. I would like to hear your thoughts about it.
