April 11th 2017: The Indian government has freed Non-Resident Indians from the need to quote Aadhaar number while filing Income Tax returns.
So, NRIs won’t have to hurry to get Aadhaar right away although Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has revealed plans to make it compulsory for filing tax returns.
“They will get exemption from the government to maintain status quo,” according to sources in the Ministry of External Affairs. This news has surfaced a day after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced his plans to make Aadhaar compulsory. As companies, too, don’t get an Aadhaar number, they would be exempted from the new rules as well.
While passing the Finance Bill on Wednesday, Jaitley said all I-T payees would be expected to furnish their Aadhaar number and PAN.
According to the proposed amendment in the Finance Bill, Aadhaar will be required only for people who are ‘entitled’ to join the scheme. As NRIs and firms are not entitled to join Aadhaar scheme, they are outside the new provisions, the Indian Finance Minister announced.
Nevertheless, an Aadhaar number will remain obligatory for Indian residents who file tax returns from July 1, 2017.
