Every dream begins with a dreamer, Komal Sharma set her eyes on winning the Miss Teen India – USA pageant, and her dream saw the light of day. We at Sulekha sent out an interview request, her reply “ask my Dad”. At sixteen, the girl with beauty and brains answered our queries with great aplomb.
Q - How does it feel to be chosen as Miss Teen India USA?
A - When people think of pageants, they seem to right away think of the stunning gowns and the pretty crown, and that’s about it. However, in reality, a pageant is so much more than that. Participating in pageants, girls are able to publicly showcase causes they believe in, they’re able to learn vital skills such as public speaking, and they get to discover and play up their strengths and boost their confidence. Honestly, winning the title of Miss Teen India is such a dream come true for me. Not only am I able to be a role model for kids in my community, but I also get my voice to be heard on causes that I truly believe in. These opportunities don’t knock at one’s door again and again, and I feel so fortunate to have won this title, because I’ve been able to gain such an amazing experience out of it.
Q - What are your career plans?
A - When it comes to a career, my father has always told me to pursue my passion(s). Ever since I was a little girl, I have always been in love with being on the screen. Acting and dancing are two things that I live and breathe, and I hope to expand that into my career choice in the Entertainment field. Besides that, I’ve always been really interested in Business as well, so I hope to combine my two passions for my career.
Q - Who is your idol you admire the most and would emulate in your life?
A - I’ve always had one and only one idol in life, and that would be my sister, Kartiki Sharma. She is the most level headed and open minded person I have ever met, and she is the only person I know who stays true to herself no matter what. She has so many values and principles that she strongly believes in, which I think kids everywhere, myself included, should be instilled with. And she has helped me and so many others with her sense of judgment. I only hope to learn a lot from her, because I know she has a lot to teach.
Q - What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?
The best compliment I’ve ever received would probably be that I have beautiful eyes. I truly believe that the eyes are the windows to the soul, so for me, receiving a compliment like that, is not addressing just my eyes, but me as a person.
Q - What is it about the Indian Culture you value the most?
A - There are so many things that I value about my Indian Culture. But to me, I value the Mahabharata and Ramayana stories that my grandmother and mother used to tell me. These legends each had a life lesson specific to them, and I think that with my grandmother and mom telling me these stories, they were instilling me with our Indian values, and also enlightening me about our colorful heritage. The values that are passed from generation to generation are definitely the most cherished part of the Indian culture in my opinion.
Q - If you were given the opportunity to work in films, which character would you like to re-enact?
A - It’s kind of funny that I actually do aspire to go into the Entertainment industry! But I would love to re-enact Aishwarya Rai’s role in Jodha Akbhar. I’d specifically want to re-enact that role because that movie and that role demands knowledge of Indian history, and the language spoken is such beautiful and pure Hindi. I feel like along with acting, I’d get to learn so much more about how tradition really was in the times of Akbhar.
Q - What is your idea of a dream man?
A - Well, I am only 16 years old, so I’m not really all that concerned with that right now. I simply believe that if something is meant to happen, it will happen.
Q - What do you believe is the most important thing to stay happy and content in life?
A - I have the choice to be happy. Life really is too short to be anything but happy- I don’t believe in wasting a day by regretting doing or not doing something. I’ve set one goal in life, and that is to achieve everything I set my eyes on. I’m going to go out there, and with my hard work get what I want, and where I want to be in life. And as long as I’m doing what I love, and surround myself with people I love, I know I’ll be happy. So really the most important thing? Do what you love to do, and surround yourself with people you love. Ultimately you have the choice to be happy.
