Happy Janamashtmi to all Sulekha readers. The Indian festive season has started. After Rakshabandhan now it’s time for Janmashtmi.Janmashtmi is Shree Krishna’s birthday celebration and it is celebrated with full of enthusiasm not only in India but everywhere where there are Indians.
Mathura, the birth place of Lord Krishna, is decorated with flowers and lamps. The celebration starts from midnight by offering special pujas, singing devotional songs, and preparing sweets. Janmaashtami is celebrated with different names across India.
In Mumbai and Pune, it is celebrated as dahi handi. The handi refers to a clay pot filled with buttermilk and is hanged to a height so that devotees break it by hitting with a coconut. Energetic men make a human pyramid and climb on each other to reach the pot and they break the pot.
In Seattle it is celebrated in two temples.
1) Bellevue Hindu temple on 27th august: Events include kirtan, singing the Lord’s name along with other devotees more intimate prayer. Some devotees cook a feast of over one hundred dishes, while others perform drama and dance. Some clothes are decorated for the deity of Krishna while others string enormous flower garlands and other decorations for the temple. There is also fancy dress competition for kids who wear best Krishna and Radha outfits. They also do abhishekham by milk. Also lord Krishna is set on swing.
2) Iskcon temple at Sammamish on 28th august: The temple is beautifully decorated with curtains and flowers. Idols of lord Krishna and Radha are also beautifully decorated with new clothes and jewelry. At midnight, the statue of infant Krishna is bathed and placed in a cradle, which is rocked, amidst the blowing of conch shells and the ringing of bells. Kids perform dance and drama.
