One fine night when I couldn’t sleep, I started exploring Instagram. I don’t remember how my vegetarian hash tag led me to anorexia. This was the most unsettling night of my life.
The pictures were filled with teenagers who were trying to fit in this society where your body mass and looks decide you fate. Almost every user was obsessed with losing weight to such extents that they started fancying anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders! They hated being size 4 and would do anything for a size 0!
As I tried to dig deeper, I found out that each of them had been bullied and to such extent that they had suicidal thoughts. They were made to believe that they do not exist and nobody cares what happens to them. They put up suicidal notes and explicit pictures of cutting themselves on Instagram for the world to see. Giving advices where to get blades and how to cut! Some of the hash tags they used were Selfhate, Anorexia, Cuttingmyself, Depressed, Suicidal, killmyself!!?
This was the most unnerving moment for me to see such young kids inflicting wounds on themselves and putting up online for whole world to see but scared of seeking help from their loved ones.
In 2012 Instagram took down self-harm hash tags and threatened to disable accounts that promote or glorify acts like suicide and eating disorders. Instagram has community guidelines that states “if any account found encouraging or urging users to embrace anorexia, bulimia, or other eating disorders; or to cut, harm themselves, or commit suicide will result in a disabled account without warning.”
But these accounts/hash tags still exist… Why Instagram hasn’t done anything except some disclaimers? Is there a way to put an end to this craziness? Can these kids be helped?
