It is that time of the year when we start looking for the dandiya sticks in the closet where layers of dust accumulate as they have been lying around for a year. I have been brought up in Gujarat and have a special place for the Navratri festival as there are lots of memories associated with this.
Every year we used to look forward for the Navratri as this is the time when we would go hunting for various events where we could play dandiya. The events would start in the evening with varieties of indian food followed by Garba and Dandiya often it would run into the wee hours of the next morning.
When I moved to US I thought that I would not be able to enjoy the Garba here in US but to my pleasant surprise there are lots of events where Garba is played here in US. I live in Bellevue which is close to Seattle and am already looking out for all the Dandiya events around Bellevue and Seattle. Dandiya and Garba are the featured dances of Navratri evenings.
Navaratri is celebrated for nine consecutive nights in praise of Lord Rama and Goddess Durga from the end of September to early October. These originated in the state of Gujarat but is celebrated across India. It is the longest Hindu festival celebrated all over India. The Dandiya Raas dance originated as devotional Garba dances, which were performed in Durga's honor. The origin of these dance performances can be traced back to the life of Lord Krishna. If you are a Garba and Dandiya fan like me you would like to check out all the events listed below. Have fun and Happy Navratri !!!
