We know that every individual is special and has some or the other strength, the only issue is we need to find our strength that is the tough part. It will be incorrect to say that any person who doesn’t speak or hear can’t survive in this competitive world but we know that it is a really difficult job to succeed in today’s competitive environment.
But then there are examples of people who have succeeded despite physical challenges and it is very motivating to hear their stories. One such person is Claudia Gordon, who is a very successful lawyer and is appointed as public engagement advisor for disability community at white house.
Gordon was born in Jamaica and became deaf at the age of eight. After becoming deaf, she experienced discrimination in Jamaica. She is the first deaf lawyer who is African American and female, and also the first deaf student to graduate from the American University (AU) Washington College of Law, in Washington, DC, in 2000. More awards and honors came at American University, where she was an Equal Justice Foundation Fellow, had the Myers Law Scholarship, and the J. Franklin Bourne Scholarship. In 2002, she received the Paul G. Hearne Leadership Award from the American Association of People with Disabilities.
Claudia Gordon received LCCF’s Amos Kendall Award; it’s awarded to deaf people who are recognized for their notable excellence in a professional field not related to deafness. Gordon is the first deaf African-American female attorney in the United States of America. She explains her cases in court with the help of sign language. We all should be inspired to find our strength.
