In India it is very common to hear about Mela’s. Many cultures, art forms, cuisines, regions, languages, gods and goddesses, landscapes, colors. So diverse yet so united, so ancient yet so modern, so grand, majestic and mysterious, that’s incredible India. Mela is generally like a village fair. This weekend in Redmond, a Mela was held and it was called Anand Mela.
It is organized every year in July by Vedic culture center in Redmond. It’s a joyful festival of India –a free community oriented celebration .The best thing about this Mela is all the attractions offer visitors a large, satisfying taste of Indian culture.
It was a free event in which 20000 attendees took part at the Redmond city hall campus.
This year the interesting part of Mela was the exhibition of model around 20-foot-long that described how the Ganges River nourishes millions of inhabitants who revere their river as the goddess Ganga, a Hindu deity.
One segment included nine islands of devotional service at Mayapur, which symbolized nine ways to maintain intimacy with god.
In India every festival involves the custom of putting henna on hands with various designs.
I was so happy to see booths of henna tattoos and henna in this mela. There were booths showcasing traditional jewelry and clothes of India.
Coming to the best part of the mela, all the variety of indian food at various stalls. Popular choices ranged from spicy Bombay Chaat, paav bhaji and crispy Vegetable Manchurian to sweet Gulab Jamun and Jalebi.
There was also Bengali sweet called Sandesh. Throughout the festival, a variety of entertainment including puppet shows, music and dance took place on two stages.
There were also other exciting performances, such as the Nada Metha-Garba workshop, and the dance competition, in which winners won tickets to Hawaii.
In the nearby field, cricket was played. There were also inflatables and merry go round for kids. Cooking contest was also organized for all the housewives. It was full of fun and nice to see lots of Indian in US.
