Oct 5, 2017: Mersal is without doubt one of the most anticipated Vijay flicks of 2017. While the film is scheduled to hit screens for Diwali, there are some hurdles that makes one wonder whether Mersal would release as planned.
First, the Multiplex Association of India and TN Theatre Owners and Distributors Association have together organized a strike which blocks the release of upcoming Kollywood films.
Next, there’s a case against the title Mersal which is awaiting a verdict. The Madras high court has issued an interim stay on using the title Mersal in response to a case filed by AR Film Factory producer A Rajendran, who has stated that he registered the title Merrasalaitan way back in 2014 with the film chamber.
So, no new Tamil movie will hit screens starting Friday in protest against the charging of 10 percent local body tax in addition to the 28 percent Goods and Service Tax (GST), which was announced in July. And there is still no confirmation on when the strike will end, raising doubts on whether Mersal will be able to make it to the silver screen this Diwali.
The interim stay on ‘Mersal’ makes one wonder whether the film will be able to hold on to its existing title. Sources reveal that the judge has posted the case for its last hearing on Friday. If the verdict is not in favour of Mersal, the makers of the film will have to go through a title changing process, which may delay the film’s release.
Vijay’s fans will of course be hoping that Mersal breaks all shackles and hits screens on Diwali 2017.
Mersal stars Ilayathalapathy Vijay in the triple role of a panchayat head, a doctor and a magician. The Atlee directorial also stars Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha, SJ Suryah and Nithya Menen in key roles. Oscar winning music director AR Rahman has composed music.
