Diwali or Deepavali, as most of you are aware is the "festival of lights”. This Mega festival generally occurs between mid-October and mid-November. This year Diwali is on 13th November. Colorful varieties of fireworks are always associated with this festival. On this auspicious day, people light up diyas and candles all around and within their homes.
Some Background: Diwali is the celebration of the return of Lord Ram, along with Sita and Lakshman, from their 14-year-long exile and also the victory over king Ravan of Lanka.

Symbol of Diwali : The Oil Lamps
In celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya illuminated the entire kingdom with earthen diyas and by bursting firecrackers.

Rangoli is an integral part in the Diwali celebration. Diwali Rangoli are special attractions where people decorate some part of their floor or entrance with beautiful colors and flowers in various patterns, designs and shapes to welcome their Guests with a warm feeling.

Hindu homes worship Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Ganesh, the God of auspicious beginnings, and then light lamps in the streets and homes to welcome prosperity and well-being.

Burning crackers on the Diwali night has always been of a great interest among all the age groups.

In USA:
Last year it was my first Diwali in USA .I was wondering that I will miss the Diwali celebration back home in India. But when I heard about the celebration of Diwali in Bothell Hindu temple I was very happy. There was Aarti of Goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesh followed by fireworks display for around 30 minutes. There were nearly 5000 people who gathered in the temple and we found a lot of our friends over there.

Diwali celebration seems incomplete without fireworks but one should be very cautious while burning these crackers. Inappropriate handling could lead to hazardous situations and spoil the celebration. In order to enjoy this festival of happiness one should observe all the safety measures. I am eagerly waiting for Diwali and hope you too are waiting for it. Have fun!!!
