March 2017: Online retailer Amazon.com took down an underwear displaying the image of Hindu deity Lord Hanuman within a day after Hindus termed it "highly inappropriate".
Amazon.com has also got rid of a doormat with Lord Hanuman’s image.
Made from satin cloth, Hanuman men's underwear was sold for $49.62 at Amazon.com attracting widespread protests from Hindus.
In a statement, Indo-American Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, who led the protest asking for immediate removal of the product, has thanked Amazon.com for understanding the concerns of Hindus.
However, Rajan Zed indicated that a formal apology is still due from Amazon.com President Jeffrey P. Bezos, as this wasn’t the first time the company has offered products deemed offensive by Hindu devotees.
Rajan Zed also suggested that Amazon and other firms should give its senior executives some training in religious and cultural sensitivity so that they can have an understanding of the sentiments of communities before launching new products or ad campaigns.
Zed added that Lord Hanuman is meant to be worshipped in temples and not to wear on your hip/crotch or touch with your feet.
Rajan Zed says that offensive items sold by Amazon include gods on doormats, bed sheets, sweatpants, bedspreads, bed covers, floor mats, rugs, and even skateboards with images of gods on them.
Earlier in Jan, Amazon came under fire for selling an underwear carrying the image of Lord Ganesha.
India’s Minister of External affairs Sushma Swaraj also slammed Amazon for selling doormats with the Indian flag on it. She threatened the firm to “not grant Indian Visa to any Amazon official” and “rescind the Visas issued earlier.”
“Amazon must tender unconditional apology. They must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately,” she wrote in a tweet.
