June 13, 2017: Pakistan Cricket team managed to book a semifinal berth by giving Sri Lanka a shocking defeat in the final league match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.
It was a close match but Pakistan was able to remain calm and steady in spite of all the pressure. They ended up defeating Sri Lanka by seven wickets at Cardiff on Monday.
After getting all the Lankans out for 236, Pakistan had a bumpy start with a batting collapse happening in the middle of the innings.
However, Sri Lanka did the blunder of matching Pakistan when it comes to poor fielding. This helped captain Sarfraz Ahmed (61 not out) and Mohammad Amir to play a stabilizing role and take Pakistan to the next round.
Junaid Khan (3-40) and Hasan Ali (3-43) bowled impressively for Pakistan and helped their team make an extraordinary comeback following their embarrassing defeat against archrivals India.
Pakistan is set to meet England in the semi-finals on Wednesday after this thrilling three-wicket win. If they can beat England, Pakistan will get to their first Champions Trophy final on Sunday.
India, meanwhile, is set to play against Bangladesh in the other semi-final on Thursday at Edgbaston.
By the end of the 16th over, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal were sent back to the dressing room. Skipper Angelo Mathews consolidated the batting and Sri Lanka recovered to 161-3.
Nonetheless, Mohammad Amir and Junaid’s left-arm swing turned the match upside-down in Pakistan’s favour.
Amir bowled Mathews (39), whose attempted pull shot ended up bottom-edged on to the stumps.
Dhananjaya de Silva, who showed up for the first time in the tournament, scored just one before getting caught behind, thanks to a moving delivery from Junaid.
Even as the other batsmen faltered, Sri Lankan opener Niroshan Dickwella brought in some solidity before getting out for 73 as a result of a terrific diving catch by Sarfraz off the bowling of Amir.
At that time Thisara Perera (1) edged one from Junaid to slip and Sri Lanka had buckled down to 167-7.
Pakistan’s other two seamers were instrumental in building the pressure in the middle overs.
Hasan Ali gave another superb bowling show, while debutant Faheem Ashraf helped take two wickets.
While Sri Lanka appeared to be cruising towards around 250, Hasan struck with a slower off-cutter, hitting the bail and taking the wicket of Suranga Lakmal (26).
Overall, the match marked a disheartening end for Sri Lanka, who only last week thrashed defending Champions India.
