May 24, 2017: Indian captain Virat Kohli says team India is in great shape ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy and has attributed it to their vast IPL experience.
Talking to presspersons ahead of their take off to England, Kohli expressed confidence about successfully defending their Champions Trophy title, which was won in 2013 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
However, Kohli reiterated that team India doesn’t want to put itself under pressure due to the fact that they are the defending champions. The Indian captain said the team wants to just enjoy the game the same way they did “last time”. He also pointed out that his side has done well in Test cricket and T20s and is keen to maintain the success in all three formats of the game.
While there is a buzz that the Indian team could be somewhat fatigued due to the long IPL season, Kohli maintained that the IPL experience has actually helped in keeping them "match-ready”.
Talking about the tremendous hype around the upcoming India-Pakistan clash on June 4 at the Edgbaston ground in Birmingham, Kohli said, “it is the same as any other match,” adding that the hype around the game is beyond their control.
It may be noted that the Champions Trophy is the only ICC tournament where Pakistan has defeated team India. While Pakistan has two wins against India, the latter’s first win over its archrivals arrived only in 2013.
However, India is way ahead of Pakistan in the World T20 and the fifty-over World Cup record books with a lead of 11-0. India won the tournament in 2013 defeating England in the finals by five runs.
The Champions Trophy is all set to get started from June 1 when hosts England take on Bangladesh.
After playing Pakistan on June 4, India will have its face-offs with Sri Lanka and South Africa on June 8 and June 11 respectively.
