May 29, 2017: With the stage set for the start of Champions Trophy 2017 in England on Thursday, former Australia captain Ian Chappell has picked the teams which he feels are favorites to make it to the tournament’s semi-finals.
Champions Trophy 2017, which features the top 8 ODI teams in the world, opens on June 1 and concludes on June 18.
According to Chappell, defending champions India and Australia are likely to enter the semis along with hosts England and South Africa.
“The four really strong squads are hosts England, defending champions India and perennial competitors Australia and South Africa,” Chappell wrote on espncricinfo.
“Throughout its history, the Champions Trophy has struggled to gain traction. However, a semi-final line-up of England, Australia, India and South Africa promises something we don't see often enough in 50 over cricket: a highly competitive and entertaining tournament,” he added.
Chappell feels team India is in good form due to its participation in the recent Indian Premier League (IPL). Talking about India’s chances, Chappell said, “Kohli's men have turned up for this tournament with a glut of T20 games in the IPL. This may turn out to be good preparation, especially when followed by a couple of 50-over warm-up games to get the mindfully attuned to the longer version. T20 cricket ensures batsmen are looking for runs and, of late, bowlers have focused more on taking wickets - the ideal mindset for both facets of the one-day game.”
He also added that India has a good chance in spite of having less pace compared to other countries due to their balanced bowling attack.
Team India is set to open their campaign against archrivals Pakistan on Sunday, June 4.
