Jun 18, 2017: Pakistan, which was among the tournament underdogs, defeated defending champions and favorites India by 180 runs to lift Champions Trophy 2017 on Sunday.
After facing an embarrassing 120-run loss to India at Edgbaston in a qualifying match, they shocked tournament favorites Sri Lanka, South Africa, England and finally India with successive wins.
On Sunday, Pakistan outperformed India in all departments of the game. Put in to bat, Pakistan was able to build a solid foundation, thanks to a livewire 114 from young batsman Fakhar Zaman. Other top batsman of the day for Pakistan included Azhar Ali, Babar Azam and Imad Wasim, who helped the team to reach a massive total of 338.
The Pakistani bowlers, who have apparently revived themselves after their defeat against India in the qualifiers, were aggressive right from the start. Mohammad Amir ripped through the top order batsmen, getting Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan out with his aggressive pace and swing.
Man-of-the-series and the tournament’s highest wicket-taker Hasan Ali bowled tight line and length to take three wickets and ensure team India loses all hopes of a comeback.
Although there wasn’t much in the pitch for the blowers, the Indian batting could do hardly anything about reaching the huge total, except for Hardik Pandya, who scored 76 runs off 43 balls before getting run out due to a mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja.
Overall, it was the aggressive game play of Pakistan that ensured that its team goes home as the new champions of the tournament.
