We Indians have a lot of traditions and customs that we are asked to follow without any reasons. Most of these customs are so strange that we are sometimes embarrassed to even acknowledge them. I was one among those who almost fell out of following Indian traditions like using Silver Tumblers instead of fancy tea cups, hanging Neem leaves around the house and even wearing pottu or Bhindi. But only when I researched and questioned my grandparents about it all, did I find out that very custom has a reason behind it. Here are some of the Scientific Reasons Behind Indian Customs …
Why to provide drinks in Silver Tumblers?

Even if Silver Tumblers don’t look as fancy as porcelain cup and saucer sets they are considered very highly in India. According to Indian custom, one should offer water or hot drinks to guests in silver tumblers. Why? Because the tumbler is made of a precious metal and so it makes the guests feel honored. Also since silver metal is germicidal it helps prevent any infection that the guests might transmit.
Why to hang Neem leaves in the house…

Neem leaves or Margosa leaves and Mango leaves are hung at the entrance of houses as a tradition. They are done so because Neem acts as an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic that prevents infections from affecting the inmates.
Likewise, why should one Meditate under Trees…

Sitting under a tree meant, access to a lot of fresh oxygen for the brain cells. Fresh oxygen activates the brain cells and results in people thinking wisely and intelligently. Dint Issac Newton come up with the “gravity concept” while he was sitting under an apple tree…?
Why to join both palms together to greet others…?

The Tamil culture encourages the joining of palms together to greet others. This is termed as the famous “Vanakkam” as per Tamilian tradition. Joining of the palms presses the pressure points in the palms together and helps in remembering the person for a long time. Not just that, when we join our hands at the level of the heart it signifies that the greeting is from the heart or soul.
