Madras Week Celebrations 2014
“Will the real Chennaites please put your hands up!!?” If you’re someone from the historically strong city of Madras (a.k.a Chennai) then you will know all about the “Madras Week Celebrations” that’s happening from August 17 to 24, 2014.
Apparently, it was on August 22, 1639 that ‘Madras’ was founded… Or rather, the “sliver of land (the now Madras), where the Fort. St. George still stands, was transacted by the East India Company. According to history, “The deal was struck by Francis Day, his ‘dubash’ Beri Thimmappa, and their superior, Andrew Cogan, with the local Nayak rulers. It is believed that this deal was made on August 22, 1639.”
Today, Chennai / Madras is one of India’s metropolitan cities that stands tall for various reasons including its history, tourism, education, IT, healthcare, tourism, industries, movies, etc. With this pride in mind the Murugappa Group in association with The Hindu have attempted to capture the soul of the city with TheMadrasSong…Take a look!
The Madras week is being celebrated by the true madras lovers with various activities like “heritage walks, school exchange programmes, talks and contests, poetry and music and quiz, food fests and rallies, photo exhibitions and bike tours.”
