Mehendi and Haldi Ceremony
A day before the wedding, the palm and feet of the bride is decorated with "Mehendi" (henna tattoos). The couple is anointed with turmeric, sandalwood paste and oil in their respective homes, which cleanses the body, softens the skin and makes it aromatic. They are then bathed to the chanting of Vedic mantras.
Baarat: Wedding Procession
Baarat is one of the most fun filled traditions in the entire wedding ceremony. It is a procession, which starts from the groom’s house and proceeds to the wedding venue. The procession is attended by the all the relatives and friends of the groom.
Kanya Danam: Giving Away of the Daughter
During this tradition the father of the bride (or guardian) pours out a libation of sacred water on his daughter, symbolizing the 'giving away' of her to the bridegroom. The groom recites Vedic hymns to Kama, the God of love, for pure love and blessings and also promises to assist the bride in realizing three things: dharma, artha, and kama.
Agni Parinaya : The Circumambulation of the Fire
The bridegroom holds the bride by the hand and they walk three times around the nuptial fire while reciting Vedic hymns to Gods for prosperity, good fortune, and conjugal fidelity.
Saath Phere: Seven Steps
This is the most important tradition in Indian weddings. The bride and the bridegroom take seven steps together around the fire vowing 'to nourish each other, to grow together in strength, to preserve wealth, to share the joys and sorrows, to care for their children, to be together forever and to remain as lifelong friends'.
Mangal Sutra Dharana
The Mangal Suthra Dharana is the tying of the holy thread in the neck of the bride by the groom. This declares that they are now a couple.
